The Blind Mans Meal, 1903
In the Blue Period, Picasso
seems to have seen everything in blue, as of he had placed a coloured filter between
himself and the world. He chose blue deliberately; it expresses a feeling that is
precise, particular. Blue is the colour of the night, of the ocean, and of the
sky. It is a deep, cold colour that symbolizes pessimism and misery - as opposed to
yellow or red, colours that express life, sun and warmth.

The theme of blindness obsessed Picasso during this period. The blind man in this
painting lacks sight, but he does have the sense of touch, so Picasso has given emphasis
to his hands. For a painter, whose entire power rests in the eyes, blindness is the
worst of infirmities. Most of all, Picasso wanted ot commmunicate through this theme
that true sight is internal vision - what the artist sees and feels when he or she has
understood that the external world is only appearance.
