Portrait of Jacqueline, 1954
Picasso sought to
express not only his models character and her particular gestures, but also the
feelings that she aroused in him. For each type of woman there was a corresponding
style. Distortions resulted form his desire to show everything on one canvas, to
present the female model in all her aspects simultaneously - full face, profile and three-
quarters view. But as there was only one plane, the canvas, the face had to be
twisted to allow all these parts to be seen successively.

Jacqueline Roque - with her Grecian profile,
straight nose and large, almond-shaped eyes - represented of Picasso the Mediterranean
women. He often depicted her kneeling, dressed in Turkish costume. In this
portrait he simplified the planes of her face in order to render the rigorous purity of
her features.
