Wheat Field under Threatening Skies with Crows, 1890

Painted in July 1890, many believe this to be the last canvas painted by van Gogh.  The blue sky and the yellow fields pull away from each other with disturbing violence, across their boundary, a flock of black crows advances towards the unsteady foreground.  “They are vast fields of wheat under troubled skies, and I did not need to go out of my way to try to express sadness and extreme loneliness. I hope you will see them soon - for I hope to bring them to you in Paris as soon as possible, since I almost think that these canvases will tell you what I cannot say in words, the health and restorative forces that I see in the country”.  “The brush almost fell from my hands… I had no difficulty in expressing sadness and extreme solitude.”
